Bank Holiday Pregnancy Advice: How to Prepare in the UK
Published on: 20/08/2025
Why Bank Holiday Prep Matters in Pregnancy
Bank holidays in the UK are a chance to rest and recharge—but when you’re pregnant, they can bring extra challenges. Pharmacies, GP surgeries, and even supermarkets often run reduced hours, which isn’t ideal if you suddenly need medication, maternity essentials, or advice.
That’s why a little forward planning can make all the difference. Here’s your bank holiday pregnancy survival guide to help you feel prepared, supported, and stress-free.
1. Check Pharmacy and NHS Opening Hours
Bank holidays can mean limited hours or closures for pharmacies and GP surgeries.
-Search online for NHS pharmacy opening hours near you.
-Save NHS 111 on your phone for non-emergency medical support.
-Have your hospital maternity triage number somewhere visible, just in case.
Remember: Some large supermarkets with in-store pharmacies stay open later, but always double-check before the weekend.
2. Stock Up on Pregnancy Essentials
Running out of basics when shops are closed is the last thing you need. Add these to your bank holiday checklist:
-Prescription medication (blood pressure, thyroid, iron, etc.)
-Safe over-the-counter items (pregnancy-friendly pain relief, antacids, rehydration sachets)
-Maternity pads, breast pads, and other personal care products
-Nutritious snacks and easy meals (for when cravings strike outside shop hours!)
3. Line Up Your Support System
Bank holidays can mean friends and family are busier, so it’s smart to plan in advance:
-Arrange childcare for older children if you’re nearing your due date
-Make sure your birth partner is available (or knows your backup plan)
-Save taxi numbers in case you need to get to hospital quickly
4. Be Ready for Labour (Just in Case)
If your due date is close, you’ll thank yourself for preparing:
-Double-check your hospital bag is packed and ready
-Keep maternity notes somewhere you can grab them quickly, like in our Wellbeing Wallet
-Plan your route to the hospital, including an alternative if there are road closures or traffic
5. Use the Extra Day to Rest and Recharge
Pregnancy is hard work, don’t forget to enjoy the long weekend too.
-Stay hydrated, especially if it’s warm
-Put your feet up and give yourself permission to rest
-Take gentle walks, or do something calming and enjoyable with your partner
