2024 Stillbirth & Neonatal Death Statistics

2024 Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Statistics by NHS Trust (FOI Data)

Early-access baby loss statistics to support safer maternity care

Understanding accurate and up-to-date baby loss statistics is crucial for improving maternity safety across the UK. Official 2024 stillbirth and neonatal death data has not yet been released publicly, but MAMA Academy is committed to transparency. To support maternity healthcare professionals, commissioners, researchers, and safety leads, we are publishing these figures early using data obtained through Freedom of Information (FOI) requests.

This page provides the 2024 stillbirth and neonatal death rates by NHS Trust, along with each Trust’s 2023 figures for immediate year-on-year comparison.

Why Access to Timely Maternity and Baby Loss Data Matters

Having early, transparent access to stillbirth and neonatal death statistics helps drive safer care in multiple ways:

1. Early identification of trends

Timely data allows maternity teams to recognise whether outcomes have improved, declined, or remained consistent from the previous year—without waiting for the official national publication.

2. Better benchmarking between NHS Trusts

Comparing data across Trusts helps highlight variation in outcomes, encouraging shared learning and identification of where support, training, or additional resources may be needed.

3. Supports quality improvement and safety initiatives

Accurate statistics are essential for Trusts developing or updating:

  • maternity safety plans
  • governance reviews
  • Stillbirth Reduction Strategy goals
  • clinical audits and perinatal mortality reviews

4. Enhances accountability and transparency

Publishing these baby loss statistics empowers healthcare professionals and leaders to understand their Trust’s performance and provides a foundation for open conversations about outcomes, learning, and change.

5. Enables researchers and policymakers to act sooner

Earlier access to data helps researchers and policy leads to analyse patterns, shape recommendations, and plan interventions without waiting months for national datasets.

6. Helps families and advocates understand the landscape

Although this information is primarily for healthcare professionals, transparent reporting of stillbirth and neonatal death data supports families, charities, and campaigners working to improve maternity safety.

About the Data

These 2024 stillbirth and neonatal death figures are not yet available through MBRRACE-UK or ONS.

Data has been obtained directly from NHS Trusts via FOI requests.

Where no figures are shown for a Trust, it is because they have not responded to our FOI request (originally sent June 2025) or the exact number of neonatal deaths were not provided to us. Because of this, some of the rates cannot be worked out by the spreadsheet formula.

2023 numbers are also included to support quick, easy comparison between years.

Please note: The 2023 data is from the MBRRACE data table.

Our Commitment

MAMA Academy is dedicated to preventing baby loss and helping save babies’ lives through evidence-based information, improved training, and accessible resources for maternity teams. We hope these statistics support your work as you strive to improve outcomes for every mother and baby.
