Time lapse: the incredible journey of an embryo
Published on: 04/09/2015
A time lapse video has been made of the incredible journey of an embryo- from conception to birth, to toddler. The proud parents were given the footage of their daughter, Jaycie, who was conceived through IVF.
A world first, the video was made by experts at CARE, a fertility centre in Nottingham, and it details the development of an embryo through pregnancy all the way to toddler. Growing from just two cells to an astonishing 100 trillion cells, the video captures the journey of cell division perfectly and acts as a wonderful reminder of how amazing the human body is.
Since it opened, CARE clinics have carried out over 5,500 treatments using Embryoscope. Almost 2000 babies have been born following the process and there are currently 549 pregnancies ongoing.
Alison Campbell, head of Embryology, says
“We have amassed millions of images of embryo and development, using time lapse imaging. As scientists, we are given an incredibly insight into the viability and pregnancy potential of embryos, and our patients are thrilled to be able to witness those very early stages of life.”
