"Tommy's" responds to DJ breastfeeding controversy

The BBC have suspended radio DJ Alex Dyke following comments he made on his radio solent show last week. During the segment he described breastfeeding as “unnatural” and “not a great look” as well as asking “Couldn’t mums just stay at home and do it? I’m not offended by it, I’m just made to feel uncomfortable about it.” The comments inspired a social media backlash and the BBC described his comments as “unacceptable”. Mr Dyke has since apologised for the comments.
Kate Pinney, midwifery manager for Tommy’s said: “As midwives, we do all we can to help new mums breastfeed and give them the confidence to do this both at home and while out and about. These comments are completely unhelpful and really damaging. Breastfeeding is often not easy for women, and those who do it should be celebrated rather than abused. We applaud the BBC for suspending Alex immediately.”
