Telephone support for postnatal depression

Published on: 24/03/2015

A new study has found that routine telephone support could help to reduce symptoms of postnatal depression. It is believed that social support from peers could help to alleviate maternal depression for up to two years following birth.

The study also found that mums felt more supported by other women who had similar experiences. Participants also reported that non-judgemental support was more likely to help combat the stigma of mental illness.

It is estimated that around one in ten new mums in the UK suffer from some form of postnatal depression, and it is often not picked up until around six months after baby is born. New mums who are diagnosed with postnatal depression are urged to speak to their health visitor or GP for further help and support.
