Sands responds to clinical incident report

Published on: 01/04/2015

Sands, the UK charity leading research into and supporting families affected bty stillbirth and neonatal death, have responded to a recent report into clinical incidents in the NHS. The charity welcomed the report from the Public Administration Select Committee and says that experiences from bereaved parents helped to shape the investigation.

The inquiry into clinical incidents was launched in late 2014 and aimed to investigate how incidents in the NHS are dealt with, and how patient complaints are processed. Sands submitted valuable evidence from bereaved parents with the aim to improve the way that neonatal deaths and stillbirths are dealt with on the NHS.

The report concluded that improvements need to be made and a new system employed so that families are supported and standards are met in all NHS trusts. The findings are a positive step towards ensuring that all bereaved families receive adequate care. Sands are pleased to report that,

” the Committee has called for Human Factors and incident analysis to be incorporated into training for health professionals. By raising the standard of investigation when a baby dies and ensuring services have the mechanisms to learn and improve, we believe that babies’ lives will be saved.”
