Mums to be urged to follow healthy diet

New research has found links between heart disease and stroke and type two diabetes if mum was overweight during pregnancy. Experts are calling for more support and education to be given to women to cut the risk and help to prevent problems for their babies in later life.

A three year project has concluded that women who ate a diet high in saturated fat also ran the risk of developing problems with the placenta, leading to smaller babies and higher risks of children suffering from mood disorders. Those with a diet high in fats were found to produce lower levels of the hormone Cortisol, which is essential for controlling stress levels. Doctors say that women towards the end of their pregnancy especially would benefit from a diet lower in fat as this can help to protect the health of their babies.

Women are being urged to make use of their medical team and focus on maintaining a healthy and balanced diet throughout pregnancy in order to protect baby’s health. It’s also recommended women take care to stabilise their weight and overall diet before conceiving, for even greater health benefits.

Mums-to-be can seek support and guidance from their midwife to develop a healthy eating and moderate exercise plan to compliment their pregnancy, and ensure the healthy future of their baby. Overall the report remains positive and says that the power is in the right hands, and women can take control of their children’s future health.
