Mum gives birth to 12lb 4oz baby

Published on: 29/05/2015

A bouncing 12lb 4oz baby boy has been born in Warrington Hospital to proud parents, Keely and Michael. The couple say they had no idea their baby would be quite so big, and nothing unusual was picked up during antenatal appointments or scans.

The baby, named Noah Michael Jack Hopkins, was born on the 22nd May with mum needing only gas and air to take the edge off the pain. Despite needing treatment in special care initially, baby Noah is now doing well and is thought to be one of the biggest babies ever delivered at the hospital.

Baby Noah contracted the Group B Strep infection during birth and spent some time on the neonatal unit at the hospital. Group B Strep is a bacteria that lots of women carry but is rarely passed on to baby. In cases such as this, urgent care is needed to ensure baby makes a full recovery.

At the time of writing it was expected that baby Noah would join his mum at home, having been declared fit and well by doctors. MAMA Academy wish them all the best as they start their journey as a family of three!

Monitoring baby’s growth during pregnancy is important to ensure that all is well, and personalised growth charts are an excellent way to ensure that baby’s size is in line with expectations for mum. For more information on personalised growth charts and the Made to Measure campaign, please see our page: http://www.mamaacademy.org.uk/for-midwives/made-to-measure/
