ICP training essential for midwives

A liver disorder charity and the RCM have put together a new training module to help reduce stillbirth.

The module on intrahepatic cholestatsis of pregnancy (ICP) has been put together by the RCM and the ICP support. It will be available to RCM members through the i-learn section of the website.

The aim is to reduce stillbirth from ICP and adds to the already extensive portfolio of additional training for RCM members.

The ICP Support website contains downloadable research papers and midwifery articles, as well as accessible information for Mothers and mothers-to-be about symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of ICP.

ICP affects around one in 140 pregnant women each year in the UK, while the causes of ICP are not yet fully understood, there is an increased risk of spontaneous premature birth, fetal distress and stillbirth.

ICP support is aware that not all midwives are provided with training about the condition, and many women have to fight to have their itching- the main symptom of ICP- taken seriously.

RCM director of midwifery Louise Silverton said it was important to support RCM members to learn more about ICP.
