Birth rates at an all time low

Published on: 16/03/2015

For the first time in seven years, the birth rate in the UK has dropped, particularly among young mothers. With a fall of 3.6% in one year, the reduced number of babies being born is being hailed as a result of the government campaign to reduce teenage pregnancies.

The figures from the Health & Social Care Information Centre also show that the number of caesarean section deliveries have increased, leading to experts warning of a need for better education on the seriousness of the procedure. With the caesarean rates rising steadily, health professionals are being urged to review all operation requests thoroughly.

Women are being urged to gather as much information and support as they can to make an informed choice about their birth, and to be aware of the risks involved. Midwives are keen to work with women to discuss their birth options and to provide adequate help and support at all times.
