Baby born from ovary frozen during childhood

A woman in Belgium has become the first in the world to give birth to a baby following a tissue transplant using ovaries frozen during her childhood.

The 27 year old was treated for sickle cell anaemia at the age of 13, and had an ovary removed as part of the treatment. Her remaining ovary failed, which mean that without the transplant her chances of becoming pregnant were very unlikely. Now doctors are confident that her story will help many other young patients.

The baby boy was born in November 2014 after the woman underwent surgery to graft four of her thawed ovarian fragments onto her remaining ovary and 11 fragments onto other sites in her body. It is reported that thousands of patients have since had similar treatment in a bid to conceive, although it is only suitable for women at risk of ovarian failure, and there is a risk that the healthy ovary could be damaged in the process.

Around 40 babies have already been born using frozen ovaries across the world- true MAMA miracles!
