Could this be the end of Supervisors of Midwives?

Published on: 23/02/2015

The Nursing and Midwifery Council have accepted a report, which recommends removing supervision from its remit.

This means that the NMC may not be responsible for midwifery supervision in the future.

It is expected to take up to two years for the change to become law and the NMC has confirmed that it will carry on with its current supervisory role while a new framework is decided upon.

Cathy Warwick, chief executive of the Royal College of Midwives, said:

“At present, there are no other systems in place to take up the gaping hole that is left after the NMC decision. This is a fundamental issue about patient safety and it is one that midwives and mothers-to-be should be deeply concerned about.”
