Extra pregnancy monitoring following a stillbirth advised

Published on: 13/07/2015

The BMJ has published a meta-analysis of research around the subject of stillbirth, in the hope that identifying some common risk factors would allow future research, funding and support to be well directed.  By reviewing the results of 16 studies they found that women who had experienced a previous stillbirth had an increased risk in subsequent pregnancies and so the research concluded that couples should benefit from extra support and monitoring in later pregnancies, including pre-pregnancy counselling.

MAMA Academy would like to reassure parents who have experienced a stillbirth, that there is still a much higher chance that a subsequent positive pregnancy will be achieved, but we welcome this research’s conclusion that extra support and monitoring should be made available.
