Coronation Street tackle late pregnancy loss story

Published on: 06/01/2017

In a sad new story starting next week in Coronation Street viewers will see Michelle and Steve struggle to come to terms with the loss of their baby boy.  Michelle goes into early labour at 23 weeks and little Ruairi doesn’t make it.   The story line is made even more poignant because actress Kym Marsh, who plays Michelle, has experienced something very similar in her own life.  In 2009, the actress lost her son Archie at a similar stage of pregnancy and has said that she hopes that this story-line will help raise awareness of issues around late miscarriage and baby loss.  Writers have worked closely with the charity Sands who are experts in Stillbirth and Neonatal death support and it is hoped that this story will explore the impact on both parents and other friends and family.

Kym Marsh said: “I thought long and hard before agreeing to take on the challenge of this storyline. It is obviously a cause very close to my heart having lost my beautiful Archie at 21 weeks and 5 days. I discussed it with my family and friends, all of who were very supportive.  In the end I felt it was an important story to tell in order to raise awareness of something which affects thousands of women every year…I am very proud of what we have done with this storyline and I hope it helps raise awareness and helps people to talk about their own experiences.”
