Unborn baby initiates birthing process

A new report has concluded that unborn babies initiate the birthing process. Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Centre have identified two proteins in a baby’s lungs which are responsible for initiating the labour process. Experts believe there are now potential new targets for preventing pre-term birth.

Although further research is still needed, scientists now hope that the number of babies born prematurely can be reduced.

“By understanding the factors and pathways that initiate normal-term labor at 40 weeks, we can gain more insight into how to prevent preterm labor,” said Dr. Mendelson, Director of the North Texas March of Dimes Birth Defects Center at UT Southwestern.
