More midwifery led units

Published on: 23/03/2017

The number of births in England occurring in a midwife led unit have trebled in the last six years, rising from 5% to 14%.

New research also found that the number of midwife led units alongside an obstetric unit in England had doubled from 53 to 97 during the same period of 2010 to 2016. However, despite this, 25% of NHS England trusts still do not have a midwife led unit.

The increase in units is due to the national policy that all women should be able to choose their place of birth. This policy has been in place since 2007, and supported by the Government’s Five Year Forward View for maternity and NICE recommendations.
