How can midwives help asylum seekers?

RCM chief executive Cathy Warwick spoke last week at a conference run by Maternity Action called ‘Pregnant and destitute: How midwives can help refused asylum seekers seeking Home Office support’. Particularly highlighting the current crisis situation in Europe.  In her speech she stressed that pregnant refused asylum seekers are some of the most vulnerable people in our society and that those that remain in the UK have no status, few rights, few resources and little reason to remain in touch with representatives of the government which may mean that they are reluctant and unable to access the care they need.

She urged midwives to act in partnership with these women, helping them to access relevant health and social care, information and support when they need it.  She also highlighted the role that midwives had in lobbying the government for improvements to legislation in this area.
