Miscarriage care improving

Published on: 10/02/2017

A recent online survey regarding miscarriage care has shown a big improvement in the care women receive.  As part of the Mumsnet “Better Miscarriage Care” campaign, this recent survey compared the results from a survey conducted in 2011 and 2014, and showed steady improvement in care.

700 women who have miscarried since January 2014 were surveyed, of which 73% felt they were cared for with compassion and empathy – this was an increase from 70% in 2014, and 59% in 2011. However feedback was less positive on aftercare, especially for those who were sent home to miscarry. 74% of women reported receiving no or limited information on what to expect and only 17% reported being sent home with adequate pain medication.  Overall, NHS care was rated as excellent or good by 64% of women, an increase from 53% in 2014.

Mumsnet Chief Executive, Justine Roberts, commented on the survey results “These results show evidence of real improvements in hospital care for miscarrying women; no small achievement in a time of financial restraint in the NHS. It’s very heartening to see women’s concerns over standard of care being taken seriously.  Greater emphasis now needs to be placed on fully preparing women who are going to miscarry at home, and on proactively offering follow-up care and counselling”
