Baby girl born weighing 15lb in India

Doctors have suggested that a baby girl born in India, weighing 15lb (6.8kg) could be the heaviest child ever born in the country.

The baby girl was born via Caesarean section to her 20 year old mother, Nandini, at a hospital in the state of Karnataka. At 15lb, she weighs the same as a average six month old in India, where babies are typically born weighing between 2.5-3.5kg. She is also taller than the average newborn, measuring 62cm, compared to an average height of 50cm.

Initial investigations to see if there is a reason why the baby was born at this weight have proved inconclusive. Overweight newborns are often seen when the mother is diabetic, but this is not the case here.

The current record for the heaviest baby in India belongs to a baby boy, who was born in November 2015, weighing 14.77lb (6.7kg). The world record however, belongs to a baby boy born in Italy, born in September 1955, weighing 22lb 8oz (10.2kg).
