Youngest baby to survive major surgery

Born at just 23 weeks, a premature baby girl is thought to be the youngest person ever to survive major abdominal surgery.

Abiageal Peters was born four months early, to parents Louise and Dave, at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey in October last year. She weighed just 1.3lbs.

Abiagael needed a life saving operation on her abdomen, to treat a condition common in premature babies called perforated necrotising enterocolitis. She was transferred to the neonatal ward at St George’s Hospital in south London for the operation.

The operation took place when she was just six days old, and she spent time afterwards in the neonatal ward. She was discharged, and home in time for her original due date in February.
