New Fathers struggle with mental health problems too

A recent survey has found that in the first year of a newborn’s life, fathers are equally as likely to struggle with mental health concerns as mothers.

It was found that 3% of new mothers and fathers consider suicide within the first year of parenthood, even if just momentarily. The survey was conducted by YouGov and The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) which is a charity working to prevent male suicide.  They raised concerns that even though there is an equal likelihood of occurrence between men and women, support tends to focus on the women’s wellbeing. This means that fathers in need of support are potentially going unnoticed.

Jane Powell , CEO of CALM, comments: ‘The government’s investment in the wellbeing of new and expectant mothers is much needed and very welcome. CALM’s research makes it plain that new and expectant fathers need attention too.’
