Miracle twins

Twins, who shared just one placenta and one amniotic sac, are the first of their kind to be born in Sunderland in the last 30 years.

The twins, Jenna and Jayda, were born at 31 weeks earlier this year. Parents, Andrew and Stacey, were given the difficult news 13 weeks into their pregnancy that the identical twins had just a 50/50 chance of surviving, due to being monochorionic and monoamniotic. Sharing just one placenta and one amniotic sac is as rare as 1 in 94,000 live births.

The couple commented on how difficult the pregnancy was and how well looked after they were by the hospital: Andrew stated that “The hospital told us they hadn’t had twins like this for 36 years, so most of the staff had never dealt with it. But, they were absolutely superb throughout, we are so, so lucky to have the consultant we had and all the teams involved.”

Stacey commented that “They sat us down and told us straight there was a high chance the babies could die at any time. It was the worst pregnancy, emotionally and pain wise as well. I was so stressed and tired. But, the twins are definitely 100% worth it, they are absolutely gorgeous.”
