MAMA Wallets Impress London Hospitals

Published on: 16/10/2017

MAMA Academy is delighted to release the findings of an audit conducted to measure the impact of our Wellbeing Wallets within Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust.

The wallets have been given to expectant mothers via the community midwives at the booking in appointments since June 2016 and were generously funded by the charity, Teddy's Wish. The NHS London Strategic Clinical Network carried out an audit which took place over two days in the Day Assessment Units, via a questionnaire completed by both the women who attended the unit and the midwives in their care. The findings have just been presented to all 26 London NHS Trusts.

100% of staff members found the wallets useful and there were no unnecessary admissions in either triage or the DAU's. In summary, 30% of the women who completed the survey were there as a result of reading their MAMA Wellbeing Wallet. The reasons for their attendance mainly being reduced fetal movement or severe abdominal pain. All the mothers who completed our survey were satisfied with the care they received by their maternity team. All the non-English nationalities reported they understood the information printed on the wallet. Regarding their usage:

50% started using the wallets immediately
30% started using them before 20 weeks
10% started using them between 20 – 30 weeks

The report also showed that 30% of women used the wallets for further discussions with their midwives including topics on monitoring babies movements, general health and wellbeing, foods to avoid and signs of labour.

In conclusion, the wallets did not cause any unnecessary attendances and proved to be very helpful for both women and staff within both the Chelsea and Westminster & West Middlesex hospitals. We're delighted to know that MAMA Wellbeing Wallets will now continue distribution as funded by the NHS Trust themselves.

The audit was overseen by:

Natalie Carter, Chelsea and Westminster
Heidi Eldridge, MAMA Academy
Michaela Adeniji, NHS London SCN

Feedback received from other NHS Trusts includes:

“One mum who self referred herself to hospital with fetal movement concerns had an immediate emergency c-section due to an abnormal CTG. She reported that she had rung because she had been prompted by the message on her wallet. She felt she may not have done so if she didn’t have the constant reminder in front of her.”

Our sincerest thanks:

We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Teddy's Wish who funded a years supply of Wellbeing Wallets for Chelsea & Westminster NHS Trust. Their continuous, generous support has now led us to provide 36,000 wallets in 8 Trusts across the country over the past 18 months to help save babies lives and we couldn't be more grateful.
