Dads are affected by Post natal Depression too

Published on: 01/07/2015

Around 10% of women suffer from Post natal Depression following the birth of their baby, and dads can be affected too. New research carried out by NCT suggests that more than 1 in 3 dads are finding the challenges of parenthood difficult, and are worried about their own mental health.

The research also found that 73% of new dads found caring for their partner a huge stress following the new arrival too. Worries over their partner’s mental health accounts for a huge part of dad’s own  mental health concerns and NCT are encouraging more men to seek help and support.

Dr Sarah McMullen, Head of Research at NCT, said:

“We recognise the huge impact having a baby can have on dads as well as mums. Perinatal mental health issues can affect men or women so raising awareness of the specific concerns and questions that dads-to-be or new dads have is crucial. Dads sometimes feel uncomfortable about opening up about their feelings but we would encourage them to do so and seek the support they need.”

If you’re concerned about your own, or your partner’s mental health please do speak to your health visitor or GP for support. There is also lots of information on the NCT website here: http://www.nct.org.uk/parenting/postnatal-depression-dads.
